Most Reliable Car Brands in the U.S. for 2025

|

Reliability remains one of the top concerns for car buyers in the U.S., and the 2025 J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study has revealed the top-performing brands in terms of durability and long-term performance. Lexus, Buick, and Mazda emerge as the most reliable brands, based on the number of problems reported per 100 vehicles (PP100) after three years of use.

Lexus Tops the Reliability Chart

Lexus secures the number one spot with a rating of 140 PP100, improving its score from the previous year and reinforcing its reputation for high-quality engineering and longevity.

Buick and Mazda Impress

Buick ranks second with 143 PP100, maintaining its strong performance despite a slight increase in reported issues. Mazda makes the biggest leap, jumping 24 spots to third place with 161 PP100—its best-ever ranking in this study.

Industry-Wide Trends

The J.D. Power study highlights a concerning trend: overall vehicle reliability has declined, reaching its lowest level since 2009. This decline is largely attributed to manufacturing challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, which impacted the quality of vehicles produced in 2021 and 2022.

Top-Performing Brands

Toyota (162 PP100) and Cadillac (169 PP100) round out the top five, with Toyota showing a remarkable 27-point improvement from last year.

Among American automakers, Chevrolet and GMC rank sixth and seventh, with 169 and 181 PP100, respectively. While Chevrolet maintains its position, GMC reports a slight increase in reported issues.

How European and Korean Brands Compare

Porsche remains the most reliable German brand with 186 PP100, while BMW improves its score to 189 PP100. However, Mercedes-Benz experiences a significant setback, ranking 24th with 243 PP100.

Korean brands show mixed results, with Kia improving to 196 PP100, whereas Hyundai and Genesis see an increase in reported problems.

Tesla Makes Its Official Debut

For the first time, Tesla has been officially included in the J.D. Power rankings, recording 209 PP100—a significant improvement from last year’s unofficial estimate.

J.D. Power’s annual study remains a crucial resource for consumers and manufacturers, offering insights into long-term vehicle reliability and helping buyers make informed decisions when purchasing a car.
