OpenAI is stepping up its game in the competitive AI voice assistant market with a significant update to Advanced Voice Mode in ChatGPT. The latest enhancements improve the assistant’s conversational flow by reducing interruptions and refining its personality, making interactions more seamless and engaging.
Manuka Stratta, a post-training researcher at OpenAI, announced the update in a video shared on the company’s official social media channels. The key improvement addresses a common frustration among users—unwanted interruptions when pausing to think or breathe during a conversation.
With this update, free ChatGPT users can now experience a smoother, interruption-free conversation with the AI assistant. Meanwhile, ChatGPT Plus, Teams, Edu, Business, and Pro subscribers will benefit from an even more advanced voice experience, featuring fewer interruptions and a more direct, engaging, and creative assistant.
An OpenAI spokesperson told TechCrunch that the new voice assistant for paying users is designed to be "more concise, specific, and interactive," enhancing the overall user experience.
The update comes amid increasing competition in the AI voice assistant space. Sesame AI, a startup backed by Andreessen Horowitz and founded by Brendan Iribe (co-founder of Oculus), has recently gained traction with its hyper-realistic voice assistants, Maya and Miles. Additionally, Amazon is preparing to launch an upgraded version of Alexa, powered by advanced large language models (LLMs), further intensifying the race for AI-driven voice assistants.
By refining its voice assistant, OpenAI is reinforcing its commitment to advancing conversational AI technology. As competition heats up, the company aims to set a new standard for natural, engaging, and intelligent voice interactions in the AI landscape.
